Mills: quitting now will help Solberg
News14th June 2010
By Richard Rodgers
Navigator Phil Mills says his decision to walk away from the World Rally Championship mid-season will give his former driver Petter Solberg the best possible chance of winning the drivers’ title for a second time in 2011.
Mills announced last Friday that he was ending his 11-year association with Solberg to concentrate on his business and family life. Solberg, who partnered Mills to the world title in 2003, is now searching for a replacement co-driver ahead of the next round of the WRC in Bulgaria from July 8-11.
“It’s going to be very difficult for Petter to win [the title] this year but by quitting now, it will give Petter and his new co-driver six months to settle in with one another and get up to speed to fight for the title from the opening round of next season,” said Mills.
Welshman Mills, 46, was adamant there had been no ill-feeling between him and Solberg, despite sources close to the Petter Solberg World Rally Team suggesting Mills’ decision had come as a total surprise.
“Petter and I are very good friends and will remain so,” said Mills. “There’s been a lot of digging, especially by the media in Norway, but, really there is nothing more to it than me wanting to stop.”
Mills insisted he had no intention of walking away from the sport for good but would not be drawn on his future plans.
“My company is in motorsport and motorsport is my life so, for sure, I’ll always be around in some way but I really can’t say what I’ll be up to [in the future],” he said.
News of Solberg and Mills parting company followed rumours in Spain that suggested works Citroen duo Dani Sordo and Marc Marti would be ending their association together. However, Marti denied this was the case when contacted on Friday. www.maxrally.com/news/entry/mills_quitti...w_will_help_solberg/
